Mumbai’s Heritage Revival: Sewri Fort to Get Museum as Koli Culture Gets a Boost
Mumbai’s Vaibhav Sangopan Yojana is set to transform heritage conservation, with Sewri Fort slated for a museum and information centre, while Banganga, Worli Fort and Worli Koliwada receive renewed attention to preserve the city’s history and cultural identity.
Under the initiative, historical sites and cultural landmarks across Mumbai will be conserved and given a renewed identity. RPG Foundation has adopted Sewri Fort for conservation, while plans are also underway to preserve the heritage of Banganga, Worli Fort and Worli Koliwada.
The initiative, being accelerated by the Cultural Affairs Department at the behest of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeks to protect Mumbai’s historical and cultural legacy for future generations.
Through its initiative, ‘The Heritage Project’, RPG Foundation has reached more than 50,000 people so far. It has also supported more than 270 women in livelihood generation and entrepreneurship.
A museum and information centre are planned at Sewri Fort, which RPG Foundation has adopted with the objective of conserving the historic structure and giving it a renewed identity. The proposed facilities will help bring the fort’s history and cultural significance to the public.
Conservation-related work is also being undertaken at the Banganga pond complex, with a focus on highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
Efforts to preserve Worli Fort are also underway. The objective is to extend the heritage conservation work already being carried out in Worli Koliwada to the fort, bringing the area’s historical landmarks within the broader preservation initiative.
The conservation campaign in Worli Koliwada is focused on bringing the history, traditions, lifestyle and cultural identity of the Koli community to a wider audience.
As part of the initiative, more than 71 streetlights, over 30 information boards and more than seven public wall murals have been installed in the area.
Through these initiatives, the state government and its partners are seeking to safeguard Mumbai’s historic buildings, traditional settlements and folk culture, ensuring that the city’s distinctive heritage remains accessible to future generations.
